    What is Promotional SMS ?

Ans: A promotional SMS is a message sent by a brand to prospects and customers informing them about promotions, discounts, and offers. Marketers run promotional campaigns to increase customer engagement and rocket sales. SendPulse allows to create branded subscription forms, automate SMS sending, and personalize the messages for better performance.

    Non-Promotional / Transactional Messages :

Typically refers to, messages sent to users as an acknowledgement to the actions performed by them on your app / website.
Such messages are delivered to users, who have registered under TRAI DND list as well and message delivery takes place 24×7 !

    • Examples:
    • User signed up with you → You sending them one time password (OTP) message. –
    • Thank you for Paying an amount of Rs XYZ  towards ABC. Pl visit https://societyrun.com for more details.
    • New Visitor XYZ Checked In successfully.

What is the Difference between transactional and promotional SMS?

Ans : Transactional SMS are messages used for sending order and booking alerts, and informational messages to registered customers. These messages are not for marketing purposes. They’re sent to all the recipients regardless of their DND status 24/7 without any time restriction. Transactional SMS can be identified via a 6-character Sender ID a company chooses. This identifier should correspond with the company or product name.

Promotional SMS are for sending marketing and sales messages. They are delivered only to opt-in and non-DND numbers. Promotional SMS should be sent between 9 am and 9 pm. Promotional messages have a random 6-character Sender ID determined by the network operator.

    • Typically refers to any message sent for promoting / up-selling / advertising your business.
Such messages are not delivered to users, who have registered under TRAI DND list and are delivered only between 09:00 AM to 09:00 PM to respect user’s sms preferences.
    • Examples :
      – Promotions announcing offers / discounts
“Buy today and get 10% off on order value above INR 350/-”
    • May the Divine Light of Diwali Spread into your Life Peace, Prosperity, Happiness and Good Health.Happy Diwali.

TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) CAUTION :

As you just read correctly, Transactional Messages are delivered to DND users as well (& Businesses think it as a great opportunity to deliver promotional content to larger audience). Sometimes they send promotional messages ( intentionally / UN-intentionally ) via Transactional route, without worrying about its consequences.

TRAI has a penalty matrix, where penalty amounts vary from INR 25,000/- to INR 2,75,000/- + legal prosecution for violating TRAI DND guidelines & it also affects the telemarketer license of the messaging service provider.

To cut short the story, TRAI has a penalty matrix for users violating NCPR / DND guidelines, Penalty amounts vary from INR 25,000/- to INR 2,75,000/- followed by legal prosecution for violating TRAI DND guidelines & it also affects the telemarketer license of the messaging service provider.
